To *use* the Leaf BMS, nothing is needed, the BMS must see all 96 cells and the 3 or 4 temp sensors and you must give it 12V, then it will balance the pack independently and continuous. That is requires, because it balances with only 10mA so it takes a long time to remove any imbalance to start, but most Leaf packs never get very unbalanced so that is fine. You can connect LeafSpy to the CAN bus of the BMS using an ELM237 or similar OBD2 interface, but to integrate to an embedded control system you will need to talk CAN to the Leaf BMS. The protocol is known though it is not a neat layout of parameters, I am not sure what Nissan was thinking when designing the protocol - you will need to move bits and pieces of parameters around to get a clean set, but it is just some bitbanging. I do not have the protocol at hand, I just remember it from working on it several years ago. Cor.
