Let this one sink in for a moment - San Bernardino county in California is larger than about half the countries in Europe. For me to drive to the next state north from my house is a little under 600 miles (straight line distance - not driving distance). That is more than either London or Paris to Berlin. Or to use a very current reference, Moscow to Kyiv is only about 3/4 of the distance for me to reach Oregon.
