Hello all,

Sorry for my late reply to this question. I have encountered bad diacritics in
a few different situations. During our migration from Millennium to Evergreen
in early 2015, all of the diacritics in our catalog were altered upon import
(see what this looks like in the example below). I used to also have issues
with records from different vendors when uploading them from my desktop into
Evergreen. I saw this the most with eRecords, which I don't import anymore. I
would view and edit them in MARC Edit, save to my desktop and upload, and the
diacritics would be fine before import but would not make it through the upload
without being altered. In these two instances, I don't think that Z39.50 would
be involved at all-although maybe it is used in migrations in some way and I am
just not aware of it. When I asked our copy cataloger about this about 6 months
ago, she said she wasn't having this issue when importing through Z39.50, but
everything we bring in is via our OCLC subscription. I don't know if that makes
a difference or not.

Whenever I find words with bad diacritics, I make sure I keyword search the
catalog for that form of it (Pi©łatas), so I can find all of them at the same
time and put them in a bucket if I don't have time to fix them at the moment.
Every word and name seems to have its own unique result when the diacritics are
altered. Hope this helps a bit.

Subject: [EXTERNAL][Evergreen-catalogers] Re: Z39.50 Importer Question

Hi,

There are likely things that can be done, but it's dependent on knowing which
Z39.50 target(s) are problematic? Could you share examples?

Regards,

Galen

Good morning,

This question may be best addressed to the cataloging community specifically,
but I wanted to make sure I had all bases covered, so I apologize in advance
for any duplicate emails to those who may belong to both mailing lists.

We received the following question from a user recently about the Z39.50
importer:

“The import tool makes an absolute mess out of diacritics and other symbols.
I'm assuming that this is caused by other libraries using different character
encodings, but I was wondering if anything could be done to resolve this.”

I am admittedly not entirely certain what could possibly be done about this
since the records are being provided by other libraries, but I wanted to see if
anyone else has encountered this, and if so, what might be done to resolve it,
if anything.

Thank you.
