I'm starting to hear Democratic politicians talk about hitting back harder in a gerrymandering war.  This is a bad idea.  If every state maximizes the state majority party's advantage the Republican advantage in the house will go up from 5 to 10.  Newsom's tit-for-tat, exactly matching a GOP gain in Texas is a good idea in itself, but as in most wars it is likely to lead to tit-for-tat-tat.

I don't know what to do about this.  My only idea is the Newsom might only add 4 Dem seats instead of 5.  A tit-for-ta tactic.  And then rely on flipping a Republican seat or two without changing districts.  But if (1) the anti-Trump Congress critturs don't have majority in 2026 and (2) they don't grow spine Trump is going roll over Congress and the Judiciary and make himself Diktator for life (which fortunately won't be long).
