Nobody knows for certain. There was a Mega Ice age 2.4 billion years ago and another one 700 million years ago where the entire oceans froze over, even at the equator there were hundreds of feet of ice covering the sea. The most popular theory is that they both ended when huge volcanic eruptions injected vast amounts of black soot and greenhouse gases into the air that warmed things up. Interestingly Evolution seemed to take a big jump right after both Mega Ice Ages ended. Right after the first one advanced eukaryote cells started to show up, and right after the second we had the Cambrian Explosion and multicellular lifeforms. Why that should be is not clear.
