Sometimes new discoveries force this upon us. The flat earth, the
geocentric universe, an objective present, indestructible atoms, etc.

Here the motivation comes from non-dualistic theories of mind.  If there is
not a magical soul that was breathed into your body, then there is no
longer an identity, as all matter and patterns are in theory copyable.

Not entirely. If the photons in the two different locations are brought
back to the same location then the worlds merge.

To me closest continuer is more an idea than a theory. A theory should
allows one to make predictions. This idea appears too unspecified to even
discuss rationally.

Experiments should be repeatable, but under closest continuer experiments
are not even repeatable.

Step into a teletransporter that preserves 90% of your memories, and you
survive as the 90% accurate person.
But now step into a teletransporter that preserves 90% of your memories,
and you die.  Why?  Because 30 seconds later someone reboots the
teletransporter and it spits out a 95% accurate person.

It would also imply we die every nanosecond, as we are duplicated into
identical copies all the time via splits of the wavefunction.

Your family will also attest to the stillness of the earth or the objective
flow of time. We shouldn't rely on intuition when there are thought
experiments, paradoxes, theories, etc. which suggest the picture is not so
simple.

Regarding violence to theories, you might appreciate this quote:

I unreasonable the conclusion that perfect ties result in two new people
and that the original dies.  It's like "don't ask".  The theory clearly
fails there, so it is defined as not a problem.

It sounds like mysticism because it is the basic mystic teaching. But it's
not meaningless. It's a scientifically supported conclusion.
