CRAB: the "Cartography of Research Actors in
Brussels" project, by Mixel Kiemen (ECCO & DISC)
(this is a tryout for the presentation Mixel will give the next
day at DISC)
Tomorrow, our weekly ECCO meeting will feature a seminar by
Mixel Kiemen about the CRAB project. CRAB is one of several
interesting projects organized in a collaboration of VUB, ULB and
DISC (Brussels center for the knowledge society), with the intention
to develop web technologies to support research collaboration and
knowledge exchange within the Brussels area.
You may already have used some of these technologies when
searching for information through the VUB library, such as the ADB
database where you can search for millions of papers published in
thousands of journals, and V-link, which automatically generates
hyperlinks from a found reference to lots of other databases that
contain more information on that reference (including often the full
text).
The CRAB project aims to build a database of research
"actors" (individuals, departments, organizations...) in
Brussels, summarizing what they are busy with, linking to their
homepages, publications, preprints and other relevant information via
V-link, organizing them in "themes", and visualizing the
arrangement. This should make it much easier to find out who is
interested in or working on what within the Brussels research
community. As such, it would be an extension of what we wanted to do
in ECCO with the "Brussels Complexity" area:
