Just a side note: I've been following the development of Subversion,
collab.net's next-generation CVS replacement, and I've been amused to
see them encounter exactly the same problems that we've been having
regarding libdb's brokenness.  They need a db for their server, and are
also having to distribute sources for a specific version of db3 to
statically link against.

I suspect that many other projects will also have to do this, unless the
Sleepycat people get their act together. :(
