I didn't know who else to ask/request this, so here goes...

We need some stable development in regards to software multimedia.
(avi, mpeg, mpeg4, divx, etc)

Linux just plain lacks big time in this area (Gnome based would be best
of course).

There are a few projects that actually work well or are fairly self
contained but one really stands out from the crowd;

MPlayer: It's very good, but dever's here are very immature (check their
mailing lists). Their current licensing will not allow binary packages,
might ruin their reputation :-) (seriously, their words). But, this
actually is the best bet, and if approached by the big boys, I think
licensing would change. This is a *very* capable media player and
already works very well. Someone should really go take a look at it and
talk with these guys. (it's already GTK based and runs on most platforms
too).

I've been using Linux for years, everything else has grown up (desktop,
apps, etc...) Someone really needs to spend some time in the multimedia
dept. and I think MPlayer needs to be picked up by Gnome/Ximian.

MPlayer really is impressive, someone really needs to talk to them and
guide them a little. This would be one more notch on making Gnome the
top desktop.

Sorry to rant, but this is an exceptional piece of software.

Tony
