Evolution currently seems to insist on rendering (and in the case of
IMAP retrieving) the mail, while navigating through the mal list with
the "preview" pane enabled. This is not interruptible, AFAIK.
If you got mails that reproducibly trigger bad behavior, please consider
filing a bug report and attaching that message to the report (the raw
mail, do not copy-n-paste it).
I have seen mails (particularly viruses), that take long to render,
maxing out the the CPU. And I have seen mails crashing Evo. I haven't
seen any mail yet though, that "renders forever" and forces the user to
kill Evo... HTH
