I would care if I could make them do what I want (control my server-side
spam filter).

Marginal IMHO. I just use Ctrl-L. Could get rid of the Previous and Next
buttons too for all I care.

Definitely the way to keep everyone happy. I could also use a way to
assign keyboard shortcuts without hacking the XML files.
