Alan, I simply downloaded the two rpm's that Wendell built and installed them over the existing binaries. No compiling was needed.
I don't have the link to the rpm's right now. But, a quick search of the archives of the gnome-pilot.org email list should find them for you. I've heard a couple other PIM's mentioned for linux, but haven't tried to find any of them.
