This seems to be exactly the behaviour I've seen, though I couldn't swear to the crash part as I tend to go off and do something else when the freeze happens. However my machine is a Core2Duo and nearly all my mail is on an IMAP server. F7, kernel kernel-2.6.22.1-41.fc7, Evo 2.10.3, Gnome 2.18.
