Think again. The specific bug is that Evo is hanging because it's checking a slow/unreliable remote LDAP server for valid addresses so as not to file mail as Junk. AFAIK that doesn't depend on how you actually receive the mail. The relevant options are two tickboxes under Preferences->Mail Preferences->Junk.
