Perhaps the OP isn't patient enough. Evolution's search folders search
is very slow and even after it's finished "Updating folder" and
"Retrieving message" could take hours on a 2.1 GHz dual-core, 4 GiB RAM
machine. There are indeed MUAs doing the same in a few seconds.

At the moment I try to open a mail in a search folder, using Evolution
3.12.4.
