The first one, yes, it opens Firefox and no it opens my homepage instead
of the link:
chris@localhost:~$ xdg-open "https://wiki.gnome.org/Evolution";
chris@localhost:~$

The 2nd tells me this:

chris@localhost:~$ firefox "https://wiki.gnome.org/Evolution";
