I have confirmed that it was a problem with the oxygen-gtk+ theme. I switched it to clearlooks or adwaita via "kcmshell4 kcmgtk" and the problem is not reproducible. Unfortunately, the text keeps getting chopped off at the top of the page and there's no way to change the margins long the top and sides.
