This problem started unexpectedly this morning. Evolution is 3.16.0 from Fabian Tassin's ppa. Has worked fine for months. OS is Ubuntu 15.04. Subject error came up when I started evolution from command line. When I start evolution normally, most drop-down menus are grayed-out and bar at bottom of screen says "Generating message list." John
