(Note that 3.18.x is no longer supported. The current stable version is
3.22.)

This kind of usage pattern is exactly what IMAP was created to deal
with. Workarounds using POP and per-machines deletion policies are
kludges at best. I strongly encourage the OP to use IMAP if it's
available on his mail service.
