You don't say what version of Evolution you have. Please *always* state
this when asking questions (Help->About).

As has been discussed several times on the list, the Backup function is
really a misnomer. It's not intended for regular daily backups but for
capturing the state of your mail (and only your mail, not contacts,
tasks, address book etc.) when moving to a new system. You should use a
standard home directory backup strategy as well as (or instead of) this
function.

That said, the backup is just a big tar.gz file with the local state in
it. If your file won't grow beyond a certain size there might be a
limitation of some kind in your system, such as maximum file size or
disk quota.
