Sorry I am not familiar with how lists work hopefully this is correct?

Thanks for your advice I will try updating to the later version in a VM first.
Can you recommend a reliable link to a procedure that you would recommend for 
updating my current version?
Reading around a lot of "grey beard's" advice seems to be not to attempt 
updates as there may be a reason why the distro maintainer has not already 
updated it to a newer version i.e. it may cause problems with either your 
environment now or in the future when you next upgrade to a new release of 
Mint. So I think your idea of doing it in a VM chimes with that sentiment. At 
least I can test it first and see if it impacts anything else.
