Ok,
I seem to have found a solution.
When I connect with x2go or vnc, I need to run this:
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESSevolution &
Even though I had unset run in the command that executes mate for x2go,
that's not enough.
I have to actually run it in the same terminal or instance that
evolution runs in.
