docs in /usr/share/doc/gnome-pilot-0.1.70/README explain this ID procedure.
I belieeve this not to be my issue as I am using the deviceID and PCid used
during the Jpilot sessions

hmmm - this didn't help me.

neither USB0 nor USB1 will work - both tried (many times)

no - i am not sure what or how this would help explain the complete
nothingness that abounds.

see below for the results of a ps auwx - as gpilotd appears to be
running I havent searched the list for solutions to the problem
described.

just to summarize:
==================
o still broken despite lots of very good suggestions - thankyou.

o RH8 with Ev 1.2 - see list below for complete ximian installation

o Jpilot syncs in either direction perfectly when attached to
/dev/ttyUSB1

o depressing the sync on the Clie proviokes the same stream of msgs in
/var/log/messages no mettwr whether Jpilot or Evolution is the target
app (i.e. the sync button is properly "connected" to the USB port)

o gpilotd and gpilotd-control-applet are running at the time of the sync
attempt, to wit:
peter 6096 0.0 0.8 13656 6412 ? S 15:25 0:00
/usr/bin/gpilotd-control-applet
peter 6211 0.0 0.4 12468 3724 ? S 15:41 0:00 gpilotd
--activate-goad-server gpilotd --goad-fd 13

installed)
