The other day I received 2 emails in Spanish. One was in HTML and the characters looked normal: compañeros, prometí, etc. The other was in plain text and instead of special characters there was nothing: xito, confirmacin, etc. In fact, when I view email source on the HTML message, the words appear like compaeros and promet. I can forward these to my wife's M$ box and they both look fine in Outlook.
At first I thought my GNOME plain text font (Monospace) might not be able to display accented chars, but here I am in Monospace (íáñ) and it seems to be working. Is there some other way I can see these messages correctly?
