OK. I'm at a loss. After clearing the option to have the desktop drawn, I've had no problems. You must have some package not installed correctly. Maybe you need to install nautilus (clear the draw desktop option and you should be OK). Can't hurt at this point, you can always un-install it later. Don't know. I suffered through this (the background issue), until I found gconf-editor, and have had no problems since. I wish you luck.
