Possibly. However, as soon as I followed Guenther's instructions and selected a default browser using this command "gnome-default-applications-properties," everything fell into place immediately. The error message no longer appears in konsol. I'm very green when it comes to Linux. I'm still puzzled as to what killed off the default browser...everything was working fine.

Do I have to install the gnome control center in order to use it in KDE, or is there a specific command to access the entire center itself?

Its probably just a coincidence or incidental, e.g. it trying to setup a
status button to show what's going on.
