can you do the following?

CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution

this will spew a log to the terminal that you start evolution from
(don't start it by clicking an icon). When you send a message, it will
pront some lines like "sending : EHLO ..." and "received: ..." and so
forth. What does it say? is there a line like "received: 250- 8BITMIME"?
