You are composing text/plain messages. Most of the features (like
emoticons, which are images) are only available in HTML mode.
Enable HTML mode in the Composer (actual message):
Format / [x] HTML
Enable HTML mails by default (if you want to):
Tools / Settings / Composer Preferences / General
[x] Format messages in HTML
