The fact that you always get www.gnu.org indicates that the "%s" is
not being expanded and Firebird is falling back to a default page.
I do this:
In gnome-control-center->Preferred Applications:
/usr/local/bin/browse %s
and in /usr/local/bin/browse:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/bin/mozilla-xremote-client "openURL($1, new-window)"
(change to new-tab if you like)
