pretty standard for network apps...

it doesn't ping the server, it sends a IMAP NOOP command which is
supposed to prevent the server from closing the connection (lets the
server know we are still there). It also tells us of updates.

nope and nope. well, you can press the Stop button in the toolbar - that
should force a disconnect (there's a few code paths where that doesn't
work, but for the most part it should)

sounds like your network is flaky and/or your imap server :-(
