If you use preformat everywhere, word wrap won't work anymore.

By the way, shortcuts for changing format are (on my US keyboard
anyway):

Ctrl-0 (zero): normal
Ctrl-7 : preformat

Changes affect the current line/paragraph or whatever is currently
selected.  Try typing a long line and toggling between them to see the
effect.
