[Evolution] contacts - the letter buttons down the right hand sideCan someon

Can someone tell me when the letter buttons down the right hand side of
the contacts window will do anything. I presume that they are to quickly
go to the section of the addressbook begining with the letter pressed,
but they (afaik) have never worked.
