Thanks for your answer!
My fonts are Helvetica and Courier, and they both have support for the
ISO-8859-15 charset. The weird thing is the euro sign prints correctly
in apps like GEdit...
I also copied /etc/gtk/gtkrc.iso-8859-15 /etc/gtk/gtkrc but after I
relaunched X it did not change a thing...
