Hi Jeffrey, The way you've done it is correct. It looks as though your experiments have lead you to the correct conclusion, though I suspect you're a little unclear why.
If you look at your first function, it doesn't take any inputs, so you can't use it to reference any other cells when you use it on the spreadsheet. Therefore Excel doesn't know to trigger your function when the drop-down changes. In your second example, the function does take an input and you're referencing your drop down. When Excel builds its calculation tree, it knows to call your function when the drop-down updates. Try Googling for Excel calculation tree to see how Excel goes about figuring out what to calculate and when.
