It sounds like you have a Windows File Association problem. Open "My Computer" Select Tools-> Folder Options. Select the File Types Tab. Scroll down to the Excel File Extensions.
Select the file extension for Excel that you're having trouble with (xls, xlsx, xlsm, xlsb) Select the "Advanced" button (bottom-right) (Note: If there is no button called "Advanced", but there IS a button called "restore", then chances are there have been some changes and selecting this button should reset them) Now, the Action called "OPEN" should be bold. This indicates that it is the default action when double-clicking the file. Select the "Open" action, and select the "Set Default" button on the right. If it's "grey'd out" then the default action is probably already set to Open... let me know if this does the trick...
