I've encountered similar issues before.
It seems to be a graphical memory issue.
Usually, I have several applications open at once.
At some point, the memory on the graphics card is exhausted.
Even when you exit the other applications, sometimes the graphics memory isn't 
released.
 
My PC was upgraded, with a graphics card with 5Gb memory.
 
The problem still occurs sometimes, but usually when I have LOTS of 
applications open.
