Yes. That's the downside. It will return a "User Unknown" message to any addresses that do not exist in the Directory. On the other hand, it will lessen the amount of mail that your server processes because the mail to the unknown recipients will not be accepted.

It is in the Message Delivery properties under Recipient Filtering. There is an option to "Filter recipients who are not in the Directory". Once you enable it in that location, you must also go into the properties of your Default SMTP VS, then the Advanced button (next to IP), then the Edit button, and check the box to enable Recipient Filtering. If you forget to do this, the setting will not be active. Is this new to Exch2K3 or does Exch2K support this? If so, where do I find it? I thought I had to use an event sink for this. You could create the "null DG" whereby you add the SMTP addresses of ex-employees, or any SMTP address you want dropped for that matter, into a DG with no members. That way the incoming email simply vaporizes without a NDR. Alternatively, you could enable the feature ( cant recall the feature's name off the top of my head) that will verify the recipients address before accepting the message. Of course, disabling OOFs and auto-replies to the Internet are recommended as well as educating your users not to respond to SPAM with unsubscribe requests etc... -----Original Message----- From: Greg [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, January 19, 2004 2:10 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: exchange 2003 SMTP queues seeing the hijacked server thread ... made me think of a question I just deployed exchange 2003 FE/BE config (migrated from exchange 5.5). I put the latest 1/13/04 exchange patch for Front End Servers. I have used ordb tool for mail relay and everything came back good. I see in my FE server SMTP queue a bunch of queues for obvious spam. I realize these are for NDRs for bogus mail domains. I added about 10 RBLs in Message delivery content filtering, applyied the filter to the SMTP queue. I also added sender filtering and blocked countries that my company never does biz with like like @*.cz, tw, cl, ch, it, etc.. I also lowered the retry time from 48 to 12 hours. Doing these things I have seen the outgoing SMTP queues fall from over 200 to about 60 which is good. Is there anything else I should be doing. Are these queues for NDRs just a fact of life (other than turning NDRs off all together)?
