We we use 5.5 and I setup a linux/postfix smtp relay which has an hourly updated copy of the GAL so it only accepts mail to legitimate users.. takes a little setting up but works a charm.
I know that ORF from Vamsoft will do a similar thing but I think you need an Exchange 2000 box behind it?
