Correct on both counts. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ken Cornetet Posted At: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 6:17 AM Posted To: Microsoft Exchange Conversation: Outlook 2002 and GC Behaviour Subject: RE: Outlook 2002 and GC Behaviour
Our setup is the same as yours. My observation is that Outlook will hang and must be restarted if it's GC goes down. Oh, and I don't believe Outlook looks for the "closest" GC every time it starts (assuming the ClosestGC reg poke). Once Outlook finds a GC, it tucks it away in the registry and seems to try it first upon startup. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Atkinson, Miles Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 6:26 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Outlook 2002 and GC Behaviour At this particular AD site there are a couple of Exchange 2000 boxes (SP3 with Sept rollup), 3x W2K GCs and all the clients are Outlook 2002 SP2 with the ClosestGC reg hack. In this way the clients split themselves across all 3 GCs for address book look ups. I'd like to confirm the behaviour of the Outlook clients when one GC is taken offline. Obviously the clients which point at the operational GCs will not have any interruptions, but what would happen to those pointing at the downed GC. My initial research would indicate two behaviours: 1) that Outlook looks for a suitable GC at start-up. Then that suitable GC is used for the remainder of that Outlook session. Hence it will need to be restarted in the scenario above in order to update the GC. 2) that Outlook will dynamically update the GC with the next best GC and there will be no break in service. Unfortunately I can't find anything conclusive on MS's site and Google Groups gave these two scenarios. In saying that the behaviour in scenario #1 was referred to more often. Anyone seen anything conclusive either way? Cheers, Miles _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=& lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
