VNC has a more lightweight protocol. You can use one viewer to manage Win2K, NT4, (gasp!) Unix/Linux, QNX, <insert your favorite obscure O/S here>. The code is in public domain and has been reviewed by more eyeballs than Jimmy Carter has peanuts.
