That's because 2000 OWA finds mailboxes based on the recipient policy. The OWA's /exchange virtual directory is set up to service the mailboxes covered by the recipient policy (in your case it is most likely the Default Recipient Policy that covers all the users)
So if your recipient policy is set to generate e-mail addresses like [EMAIL PROTECTED], then OWA will try to locate mailboxes based on %g.%s format (i.e. /exchange/john.smith) If your recipient policy is set to generate e-mail addresses with just @domainl.com, then the e-mail addresses will be generated based on the mailbox alias (mail nickname). So if the mailbox alias is jsmithm then the SMTP address will be [EMAIL PROTECTED] In that case you would use /exchange/jsmith in OWA. You could probably edit your default recipient policy and add a secondary SMTP address generator with just @domain.com, this way every user in your organization will have two addresses: one based on whatever fancy format you use and the other one based on the mailbox alias.
