One of the Exchange 5.5 servers at this place has a few large messages in
its outgoing IMC queue and can't send them.

Normally the server sends all outgoing mail to a couple of Exim boxes. For
some reason it can't push these messages out. Other outgoing messages are
flowing fine.

I can see in the logs that the SMTP conversation is going on correctly until
the Exchange server sends DATA and Exim says "Enter mail, end with "." on a
line by itself"

I am not sure if the Exchange server actually sends any data after that. But
it just silently disconnects 10 minutes later.

I don't think that this is a problem with Exim. I have tried to point this
5.5 server to other SMTP servers (Sendmail, Exchange 2000) with the same
results. I have also configured it to use DNS - it makes connections to the
remote hosts and then times out 10 minutes later.

I think I have run into some similar problems some time ago, actually
supporting Exchange 2000 SMTP boxes, but I can't quite remember now...

This 5.5 server is behind a PIX firewall. Could that cause problems with the
DATA command? or maybe it somehow screws up the SIZE command? (smaller
messages are moving fine, but these 3-5MB messages are getting stuck)
