It was ScanMail 3.82. After enabling only inbound smtp real-time scanning,
newly submitted messages started to flow without problems, but the ones that
were already stuck remained stuck. I had to open them with notepad and make
them look presentable, then save them into Pickup directory and they went
out.

In our case, we were able to verify that it was an MTU problem by using the
ping test to determine the maximum packet size, and then doing a network
capture of a failed smtp conversation. From the capture we could see that
the packets were too large to fit through the VPN.

maxmtu in the registry.

I was thinking MTU too, but in our case it does not work even when we try to
route to a machine on the same subnet.

We had a problem like this when we tried to send emails to our parent
company through a VPN. Although it had worked fine for years, somebody
changed something one day which broke SMTP sending just like yours. It
turned out to be a MTU problem. I think we just had to lower our max mtu in
the registry (and probably reboot) to make the packets fit through the VPN.

When SMTP logging is cranked to the max, data transmission will be logged.

The log won't show the data being sent.

Subject: Exchange 5.5 SMTP timeout

One of the Exchange 5.5 servers at this place has a few large messages in
its outgoing IMC queue and can't send them.

Normally the server sends all outgoing mail to a couple of Exim boxes. For
some reason it can't push these messages out. Other outgoing messages are
flowing fine.

I can see in the logs that the SMTP conversation is going on correctly until
the Exchange server sends DATA and Exim says "Enter mail, end with "." on a
line by itself"

I am not sure if the Exchange server actually sends any data after that. But
it just silently disconnects 10 minutes later.

I don't think that this is a problem with Exim. I have tried to point this
5.5 server to other SMTP servers (Sendmail, Exchange 2000) with the same
results. I have also configured it to use DNS - it makes connections to the
remote hosts and then times out 10 minutes later.

I think I have run into some similar problems some time ago, actually
supporting Exchange 2000 SMTP boxes, but I can't quite remember now...

This 5.5 server is behind a PIX firewall. Could that cause problems with the
DATA command? or maybe it somehow screws up the SIZE command? (smaller
messages are moving fine, but these 3-5MB messages are getting stuck)
