MSMAIL EVIL WORD! Don't even go there... -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Nold Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 12:54 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h
<: shiver :> Flash back to MSMail. OK so I have not been around as long as some (most) of you on this list. But still..... -----Original Message----- From: Rosales, Mario [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 10:51 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h Well the new protocol Should be... 1. One central E-mail address for everyone 2. Central e-mail will be reviewed by 1 person 3. Central Reviewer will print message and deliver 4. Recpient will hand write message and deliver to central reviewer 5. Reviewer will type message and e-mail it Using this, it should resolve the issue of Large Mailboxes, Attachment Stripping, Large Mail Messages due to attachments, and it will make it easy to monitor One mailbox. I guess we still have to deal with Spam... But at least this is only one mailbox to deal with :) How do I go about putting this into the RFC Standards? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Aaron Brasslett Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 12:41 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h Good idea. That will also automatically put an outgoing and incoming message size limit to 1.44MB :-) -----Original Message----- From: Hague, Jeff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 1:39 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h Were actually thinking about storing all outgoing email on floppy disks and then sending them to the recipients through snail mail. We figure if we can get everyone who sends us email to do it this way too, we can open it on a standalone machine and get rid of all the spam and viruses before delivering it to our users on foot - RFC 41237689.2? Jeff -----Original Message----- From: Wohlgemuth, Mike [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 1:35 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h that is where we are headed .. we already do this with all the other attachmnets ... now on to the .zips I figure one day we will "block all attachments except ..." and we will only allow the specific attachment extension for our organization (i.e we only accept .mike attachments with instructions on what to rename them to) Mike -----Original Message----- From: Hague, Jeff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 1:28 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Time to start preparing - bagle.h We block exe, com, bat, pif, scr and now zip files at our firewall. We have blocked zips since the first hours of MyDoom.A and I havent had to worry about what antivirus product protected against which variant of what worm and how quickly - its been kind of nice... Our Community knows that we do block these extensions so if someone is going to send them something, they ask the sender to change the extension and then it is up to the User to change it back. A few folks werent real happy with this but they understand the current state of affairs with viri, et al and have come around to it quite nicely. You provide the link to the actual file, and their browser will automatically prompt them to open or save the file. Link such as: Http://www.company.com/download.exe Clicking that link would prompt the customer to either open or save the file. We recently did this, but used FTP instead of http. Originally it was safe to allow zip's to pass through and we all know that is no longer true. I personally have been at a 0 day infection site (when no pattern file was available) twice in the past 3 weeks for two different worms that came in as zip files Now this: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_BAG LE.H A worm\virus that comes in as a password protected zip. Now things are going to get interesting on how we protect our mail systems. Any one have any thoughts? One of the ideas that is being tossed around here is stripping all attachments and storing them in a central DB and replacing the attachments with URLs (via 3rd party program most likely). This would put all the attachments in a central store and be easier to manage and during an outbreak we would have more power over the data in that repository and who can access it (makes cleaning up easier too I would think). Anyhow, time to start planning and being proactive....any ideas?
