Alex, you may also wish to look at Exim and the Exiscan-ACL patch. It
integrates spam and virus scanning directly in Exim's message path, and
allows you to bounce infected/spam e-mails during the SMTP session with a
55x error. Thus, you can safely send bounce notifications in the event that
a legitimate user is sending a spammy message. The only downside of this
setup is no per-user settings. Since you're running SpamAssassin at SMTP
time, the incoming message can have multiple recipients. However, to me the
benefit of properly rejecting mail I don't want outweighs the need for
per-user settings. Our environment really isn't diverse enough to call for
them, anyhow.

I also agree with Paul. Just because you can pay for support doesn't mean
it's worth it. The SpamAssassin mailing list is fantastic, I'm on it daily.
Same goes for the Exim and Exiscan lists. My Linux/Exim/SpamAssassin/ClamAV
server is like a black box. I set it up properly and just forgot about it.
IpMonitor will alert me if something fails, and weekly checks of the logs
are about all I do to maintain it.

I don't use postfix or mailscanner, but they're equally worth products with
a long history of high quality and security. Many people tend to prefer
amavisd-new over mailscanner for postfix setups, but again, I have no real
experience with either.

That was my recommendation too, but my boss has an issue with lack of paid
support with
open source solutions such as SpamAssassin and MailScanner.
I have convinced him to let us test MailScanner & IHS side-by-side, but
unless MailScanner
blows IHS out of water, I think he would go with IHS.

I'd try the open source route first, postfix & spamassassin work very well
for us and you have nothing to lose if it's not suitable for your needs.

Paul
