We have been using Symantec AV for gateways, which has the anti-spam function built in. I would be careful with this one. We are using it, with just 2 DNSBL and it works very well to block spam, the problem is we have had stability problems. There are certain maintenance items, like cleaning the queue, that you have to either do, or keep an eye on. Symantec does not document these well so it is kind of a live and learn.
We are fairly happy with the product, but for what we are doing I am sure there are better solutions. I have found that using the spamhaus.org (http://www.spamhaus.org) dns list has blocked at least 90% of all spam. So like I said I would look at trying something that will allow you to just use a dns blacklist I am sure there are free one out there, just haven't looked a lot, another good list can be found at ORDB.org. I have used Spamassassin a little on a personal mail server. didn't play with it a lot but found that it's heuristics were either way to aggressive or not aggressive enough, again I could be wrong because I didn't spend a lot of time with it. In closing I would say check out an add-on that would allow you to use a DNSBL, I have heard that MS is including this in EX2003 or in a future SP for 2003. But a DNS blacklist is a cheap/free way to stop a lot of spam. -------------------------------- Rob Weatherly -------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pitt, Jeffrey Sent: Monday, April 05, 2004 10:07 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: AntiSpam Software Symantec Antispam for gateways Very easy install and setup -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of April Fleming Sent: Monday, April 05, 2004 10:02 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: AntiSpam Software Exchange 5.5 Windows NT 4 sp 6 I have [finally] been given the go-ahead to implement an AntiSpam solution. We have researched the Corvigo Appliance and Brightmail Antispam in the past. Corvigo was way out of our budget, and my boss was not happy our test install of Brightmail, so we are back to the drawing board. I have seen posts to this list about the IhateSpamServer and SpamAssasin. I would like to know what is actually being used out there and how happy/unhappy people are with it. It is much more helpful than reading advertisements that all promise the world. So if you wouldn't mind givng a shout out for your AntiSpam software, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
