Develop a common workstation image without the clients, and a security plan that prohibits users from installing software on their own machines. Configure the machines' software firewalls and your Internet firewalls to block the IM ports and respective web sites. This may increase your support costs, especially if users are in the habit of installing their own application software. On the other hand, it could save you money if your users aren't very good at doing that and you've been spending a lot of time fixing their workstations because of their errors.
