If you remove it from AD, then AD won't yell at you next time you put a server back in there with the same name. The tool is ADSIEdit.

It was a one server environment so I had problems installing the replacement server. I ended up deleting the old server object from AD and installing the new one (correctly this time). After the new one was in, no clients could resolve their mailbox. I then had to rebuild Recipient Update Service. Deleting the server object from AD then rebuilding RUS worked for me but it was a single server environment.
