I think Tony needs to understand that the 50MB free space is what they
call "white space". When stuff is deleted, the size of the Exchange
database on disk does not shrink. Whatever was deleted is replaced with
white space, and can be used when the database grows again. This is a
more efficient way of managing the database than continually changing
the on-disk size.

Obviously you've seen the 1221 message appear in your Event Log. What
that means is that if you were to perform an offline defrag, your
database size (as seen in Windows Explorer) would be about 50MB smaller.
You would only consider performing an offline defrag if you were to
reclaim a significant amount of disk space (like several GB or
something).

It does not mean you only have 50MB free space (on disk) - that can be
determined using Windows Explorer.

Why are you bothering with an offline defrag when you are only at 3.7GB?
That's not even half the max for standard edition. The normal online
defrag should do it's job for you.

It's a 3.7GB database.
