Its a college campus and currently we restrict relay to on-campus ip addresses only.
We have always told users who live off campus that they either need to use OWA or use
their personal ISP account if they need smtp to send to non-college addresses. I have
wanted to lift that restriction and go with allowing relay for authenticated users but
I have always been met with a lot of resistence because it would mean that some folks
would have to actually change something - once. Something about having a PHD
apparently makes it difficult to change things. Anyway it just dawned on me (after
only 2 1/2 years on the job) that I should be able to add a second virtual smtp server
that allows relay for authenticated users and start moving folks over slowly while
still maintaining the old one for "legacy" users.
Thanks for the reply - I didnt think that it would be a problem but I wasnt sure.
Server systems usually seem to have undocumented "features" waiting in the wings to
give you a bad day so Im getting cautious...

Why are you planning on adding a second virtual server?
To answer your question: all of my Exchange servers are multi-homed.

Subject: Adding a second SMTP virtual server
I want to add a second SMTP virtual server - Exch2K SP3, Win2K SP4, OWA
and Exchange on same box - no FE/BE, etc. I am planning on adding a
second IP address to the box for the new virtual server to use. Are
there any strange issues I should be aware of when multihoming an
Exchange server? I know its bad news on WINS servers and DCs but I
haven't read anywhere that it is a bad plan for Exchange. I just thought
Id ask the brightest before possibly crashing it...
Thanks!
